August 29 is one of the international UN observances, International Day against Nuclear Tests. This observance was established on December 2, 2009 by the UN General Assembly.
International Day against Nuclear Tests was declared by the United Nations General Assembly to raise public awareness of the threat and danger, that nuclear weapons bring. The resolution, that established this observance, was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan and was supported unanimously by all Member States of the UN. The date of observance was chosen to commemorate the events of August 29, 1991, that marked the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test.
AC users were presented a presentation about movement "Nevada - Semipalatinsk". Hereupon they got information about its background, consequences of the nuclear testing and a well-known Kazakhstan poet and public figure Olzhas Suleimenov ,who founded the movement "Nevada - Semipalatinsk". This movement brought together the victims of nuclear tests from all around the world, which played a key role in closing the testing area in 1989. From this year, the nuclear tests are not conducting. NursultanNazarbayev, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, signed the decree of closing forever the Semipalatinsk nuclear testing area on August 29. The International antinuclear movement "Nevada - Semipalatinsk" received a support in many countries and was included in the World Register "Memory of the World" by UNESCO.
Kazakhstan, knowing at the first hand the consequences of the nuclear testing, is an example for the entire planet; Kazakhstan became the first country in the world, which has refused its arsenal of nuclear weapons.
