“Learning a language means opening a new window into the world”
Within the framework of the concept of trilingual education for 2016-2020 of the language policy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the US Embassy in Kazakhstan for the fourth time organized a national English word spelling contest (Kazakhstan Spelling Bee 2020) among students of Kazakh educational institutions.
The purpose of the competition is to promote the study of English among Kazakhstan's youth.
National Spelling Bee contests are held in many countries around the world: The United States, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Indonesia, and Pakistan. Spelling bee is constantly held in American schools. The rules of the contest are incredibly simple: the winner of the contest is the one who most correctly pronounces English words by letters.

The first round of Spelling Bee was held in our library on the basis of the International Literature Department on February 9, 2020. 40 students of leading colleges and universities of Karaganda registered online to participate in the competition. They were presented by the host Mussina K. M.., a student of a specialized school-boarding school of information technology, a reader and volunteer of the RUSL named after N. V. Gogol. She introduced the audience to the speller profiles: their place of study, hobbies and interests.

Spelling Bee was very interesting and intense. Participants-spellers pronounced English words by letters, the jury consisted of judges: Sarymsakova S., an English teacher at the private educational center "SBE", and Klunnaya V. O., an English teacher at Karaganda State University named after E. A. Buketov, and V. V. Nizhnikova, a teacher at the "Scholarship" educational center - evaluated the correct pronunciation of words. Words for them were uttered in the microphone by the pronouncer Valerie Sartor (invited professional from the USA, a teacher at KarSU named after E. A. Buketov,). The time-keeper judge Temirlan Bokebayev kept track of the time very clearly (pronunciation-repetition of words by letters took no more than 2 minutes).
Spelling Bee winners in Karaganda were:
• 1st place: Nazira Artykbaeva – senior student of the faculty of foreign languages of Karaganda State University named after E. A. Buketov. She loves reading and learning different foreign languages.
• 2nd place: Islam Rakhimbek – senior student of the faculty of chemistry of KarSU University named after E. A. Buketov. Islam is interested in English and Japanese languages.
• 3rd place: Ayazhan Tokenova – sophomore student of the faculty of foreign languages of Karaganda State University named after E. A. Buketov. In addition to learning foreign languages, Ayazhan is interested in sports and volunteer activities.
Participants who became winners in pronunciation will be invited to the national competition (second round), which will be held on March 14, 2020 in Nur-Sultan. They became owners of valuable prizes. And all participants of the contest received a certificate of an expert in English spelling.
Time passed quickly, but the contestants did not disperse for a long time. They liked to be spellers, while preparing, they began to read more literature in English, expanded their vocabulary; at the meetings of the club “Spelling Bee " in the form of a game, they tried to cope with the difficulties of English spelling, correctly using foreign words in everyday life.
We wish English language experts a victory at
Republican stage of the SPELLING BEE contest!
