Department of local history was opened in 1980 year. The main function of department are collecting and creating local lore information resources, dissemination information of local lore. It's confirm by "Mission of library" (1996), which the main function – to introduce readers to values of local culture.

The main work of department is "Regional library as a regional memory".  Program  The main purpose of program at the first stage of realization is to determinate new meaning and content of local lore work according with new informational technologies.

Priority directions:

• service on the basis of new information technologies
• work with the resources of Internet
• introduction of corporate activity in formation of local lore databases
• development of innovative and methodical activity on study of local lore
• creation of insurance fund of local lore on CD ROM

Literature fund of local lore is about Karaganda region (2883 copies; 1409 copies – on Kazakh language)

• more than 30 names of newspapers and magazines of region, city and district
• many editions of the industrial enterprises
• a local lore material the in electronic catalog (48271 records; 23495 records –on Kazakh language)

There are about 300.000 copies books of library fund. Among them there are  book fund includes 200.000 copies and periodicals fund includes 100.000 copies of books.

Among the representatives of magazines and newspapers the most old are: the newspaper  " Social Karaganda"- since 1939, magazines "Bolshevik of Kazakhstan"- since 1933, "National economy of Kazakhstan"- since 1928.

At the department the fund of rare and valuable editions.

Fund of department of literature in Art — a bright combination of traditional and modern creativity in all directions, in all art forms: books and albums on the fine arts, music, theater are added with periodicals, notes, a record library, and also the richest electronic resources.

Department of acquisition and literature processing carries out a role of the organizational, coordinating and methodical center in acquisition fund of documents and to creation EC of "Book". And it carries out acquisition on a basis «acquisition Programs for 2010-2012».

The primary goals - definition of strategy of acquisition, revealing of sources of acquisition, qualitative replenishment of fund at the library by printing editions and a DB on electronic files, processings of editions, creation EC of book fund.

The department renders methodical and consulting help to libraries area.

It was organized in 1949.
